THE
MAASIF SUMMER EVENT![]() By Jon Pepperell, pics by Daniel Towers - Cage Amateurs UK The MAASIF was back at Medway Park this weekend and we were there to watch the proceedings. The event was held at The Medway Park Leisure Centre, Gillingham, Kent and was organised by Leo Alderman, Fighting Lions, Herne Bay. A slight change to the registration process meant there was two or so hours to get registered depending what event you were taking part in. This gave the false impression that things were a bit on the quiet side as at the last Tournament there were queues going out of the hall door causing delays in the fights getting started. This time as it turned out Leo had made a brilliant move the the initial lack of numbers soon changed to the usual busy assortment of fighters as the popular Strike and Grapple, now renamed Amateur MMA, contestants arrived in numbers. The larger hall mean't that there was more room for the matted areas and also the bonus of other free space for the fighters to practice while they waited there turn. ![]() (Caption): MMA fighter Jake Bostwick - one of the referees at the event. The organisation looked good from where I was with a steady stream of fights taking place and the officials were of a high standard keeping control of the situation. This meant the attending paramedic only had a couple of incidents. A familiar face for us here at Cage Amateurs UK was present refereeing the MMA in the form of Daniel Movahedi a former fighter now turned promoter. Along with Stephen Doran, Daniel is half of the FURY MMA Team who have a show coming up on September the 8th. Amongst the other referees there was Jake "Brutal" Bostwick a current MMA fighter who can be seen regularly on the UCMMA card. ![]() One of the M.A.A.S.I.F. regulars is Premier MMA based in north west London and is run by Chris Foran. We spoke to Chris briefly during a break in the action who told us that the Gym has been open since 1996. We asked Chris what makes the gym produce quality young fighters. ![]() Chris said: "The gyms are very family orientated and stick to Traditional Martial Arts and, mixed with a combination of great instructors, that is what makes Premier gyms the great success they are." The team proved the point by winning 11 trophies taking them home to the gyms South Harrow north west London and Eascote, Middlesex. While there we also spoke to Alex Callum who trains at Premier MMA who we asked what makes him train there rather than any other gym. He told us "Chris has so much experience and the staff are full time and are dedicated to developing those that train their skills." For

We also spoke
to Dan Movahedi FURY MMA match-maker and friend of Cage Amateur's UK
who
was refereeing at this event and asked what he thought of the standard
of fighters he had seen on the busy mats while officiating.
Go
to Cage Amateurs UK for more great interviews:He said "I'm very impressed with all the various goings on through the tournament." and when it was suggested he should keep an eye out for future FURY MMA Fighters. He laughed and replied "Don't worry I'm already on the case." Organiser Leo Alderman runs the Fighting Lions which are based in Herne Bay, Kent.
